EAC Organs

SUMMIT OF HEADS OF STATES

To give general directions and impetus as to the development and achievement of the objectives of the community.

The summit meets at least every year and may hold extraordinary meetings at the request of members of the summit.

COUNCIL OF EAC MINISTERS

Main decision-making organ made up of ministers responsible for EAC Affairs/cooperation from partner states; promotes monitors and keeps under constant reviews the implementation of EAC programs.

COORDINATION COMMITTEE

Main decision-making organ made up of ministers responsible for EAC Affairs/cooperation from partner states; promotes monitors and keeps under constant reviews the implementation of EAC programs.

EAC SECRETARIAT

Executive organ of the community that ensures regulation and objectives and directives are adopted by council are properly implemented.

Headed by secretary general and comprising the executive and professional staff.

East African Legislative Assembly

Comprises nine (9) elected members from each partner state and seven (7) ex official members.

Its functions are to;

  1. Enactment of EAC legislation 
  2. Oversight and supervisory roles 
  3. Debate and approve the EAC budget

East African Court of Justice

Ensures that community law is interpreted and implemented within the treaty 

The jurisdiction of the court relates to matters arising in;-

  1. A contract or agreement of which the community or any of its institutions is a party. 
  2. Arising from dispute between the partner states regarding EAC Treaties 

Sectoral Committees

Eighteen sectoral committees composed of senior officials responsible for monitoring of programs.

These committees are;

Agriculture, efense, Education, Culture, Sports, Energy, Resources, foreign Policy, Health, Trade and Investment, customs etc.
